The City of Kenora will have to spend an extra $470,000 to complete two sewer and water projects.
One is on 10th North and Mikado Avenue and the other at the end of Park Street.
The extra money is because contractors ran into more rock than expected.
Mayor Andrew Poirier says the city has unique circumstances that have to be taken into consideration when regulations are made by upper levels of government.
“That does not cost that in Fort Frances…that does not cost that in Thunder Bay…that costs that in Kenora, Ontario, and maybe in parts of Dryden and maybe in Red Lake,” Poirier told Kenora city council recently.
“They have to hear that, because that’s a substantial amount of money for three blocks.”
Poirier adds unfortunately that’s the cost of doing business in Kenora.
“That’s a classic example for our area because they’ve run into more rock that anticipated. But that’s a regulation that government has imposed on municipalities, and we’re following it.”
Overall, the budget for these two projects has gone from $2.83 million to $3.3 million.
