National Indigenous Collaborative Housing Incorporated has provided more details surrounds housing projects being funding in the Kenora area.

John Gordon is the Chief Executive Officer of NICHI and some of the funding will go to the Seven Generations Education Institute.

“I can tell you the Seven Generations Education Institute’s funding is for $10 million for 68 student housing units.”

Gordon adds the economic development agency for Shoal Lake #40 is also getting funding.

“The Kekekoziibii Development Corporation also in Kenora is receiving $8.7 million for a project they are running for a 24 unit building to provide tenants with affordable and adequate shelter.”

This is part of the $281.5 million dollars announced for five housing projects in northern Ontario.

Gordon says all the projects being funded are for off-reserve housing.

He adds the federal government has pledged $4 billion over eight years for Indigenous housing, but further details of the funding have not been announced.
