Beauty Bay Golf Course, Senior Men’s League, July 30, 2024

We couldn’t have had a more brilliant, or possibly warmer, day for the final leg of the Kenora versus Beauty Bay senior men’s leagues. A total of 91 golfers were in attendance: 64 BB members, 17 Kenora members, and 10 guests. Before I provide you with the results, I must let you know that I stand corrected on a previous incorrect report. I had indicated that the competition between the BB senior men’s league and the Kenora senior men’s league would be low net score. The competition was low gross score.  My apologies.  Today was the epic conclusion of the friendly head-to-head battle. The format was for each golf course to host the other club and the top five gross scores from each club would be compared. Our previous meeting on July 17 yielded suspected results. Home court advantage went to Kenora. By the end of that day, we were down by 63 strokes. Not insurmountable, but certainly not easy either.  BB men rallied in spectacular fashion today. Here’s the breakdown:

July 17 Kenora senior men five top gross stroke total of 403.

July 17 BB senior men five top gross stroke total of 466.

Kenora ahead by 63 strokes.

July 30 Kenora senior men five top gross stroke total of 485.

July 30 BB senior men five top gross stroke total of 401.

BB ahead by 84 strokes.

Epic conclusion: BB wins by 21 strokes! Congratulations to us! To its credit, the Kenora senior men’s league has held this title more often than BB has. Between 2010 and 2017 BB has held the title only once. Today makes number two. I’d say we’re on a roll.

Competition holes:

Closest to the cup first shot on number 2: Dan “Birdie Putt” Parr.

Longest putt on number 6: Bruce “Nice Surprise” Braun.

Closest to the cup on first shot on number 7: Murray “I’m Awesome” Lemay.

Longest putt on number 8: Jim “Bottom of the Cup” Rivington.

Closest to the cup first shot on number 9: Dennis “Did you make the Putt?” O’Sullivan.

Longest putt on number 12: John “Smooth as Silk” Zilinski.

Longest putt on number 16: John “It’s in the Hole” Bowiec.

Longest putt on number 18: Rick “That’s Mr. Rick” Wiley.

Low gross scores are from the following BB senior men’s league members:

July 17:

Nelson Rozon 92

Richard Cone 93

Gord Sando 93

Marvin Koski 94

Jim Beaman 94

July 30:

Dean Dubreuil 77

Keith Lake 78

A.J. Giardin 82

Bruce Braun 82

Tim Tuusa 82

Thanks to everyone that participated in this event. It’s a terrific opportunity to get together as friends from different clubs. Interestingly, this event stopped after 2017, so it has been a while since we have gotten together. I, for one, am glad we did!

In other news, the season long BB senior men’s league match play continues. To get up-to-date specifics you can go to the challonge.com website or check out the posted sheet in the clubhouse. It’s a double elimination event, therefore one loss does not kick you out. You are sent to the B side where there is still opportunity to come out as overall victor.

Once again, I am grateful to all of the golfers who submitted pictures and news bits. It is much appreciated. You will see some of those contributions in today’s newsletter. Keep in mind that I invite you to send pictures news and announcements for consideration.

The following joke has been submitted by Dennis O’Sullivan. Thanks Dennis.

Police are called to an apartment and find a woman
holding a bloody 3-iron standing over a lifeless man.
The detective asks, “Ma’am, is that your husband?”
“Yes” says the woman.
“Did you hit him with that golf club?”
“Yes, yes, I did.”
The woman begins to sob, drops the club, and puts her hands on her face.
“How many times did you hit him?”
“I don’t know — put me down for a five.”

See you next week!
