City of Kenora sends delegation to AMO

The City of Kenora has a delegation of four people attending the Association of Municipalities on Ontario Conference in Ottawa this week.

Councillors Barb Manson, Kelsie Van Belleghem and Lindsey Koch are also attending.

Kyle Attanasio is Chief Administrative Officer of the City and says they have a total of three meetings with provincial cabinet ministers, including the Minister of Transportation.

He says they are looking for funding for the Kenora Airport.

“The significance of Bearskin (Airlines) leaving means that airport is no longer eligible for some capital funding from the federal government.” outlines Attanasio.

“We’re advocating to the Ministry of Transportation to provide some funding to small airports that aren’t eligible for the federal program, to help support them to thrive and operate.”

Attanasio says they also have a meeting with the Solicitor General about a couple opportunities to reduce policing costs in the city.

“Talk to them about potentially providing funding to support the city with a pilot program for a community safety officer.  These are called different things in different communities, but basically what they do is provide another layer of enforcement, freeing up the OPP.”

Attanasio says they also want to revisit the issue of screening before you enter the LCBO store, something that was shot down by the province earlier this year.

They are also meeting with the Ministry of Health to talk about primary care and changing the funding model for areas like Kenora.
