Federal NDP break agreement with Liberal government

The federal NDP is done with the supply-and-confidence deal with the Liberals.

In a video posted to his social media page, leader Jagmeet Singh says the agreement is over and that the Liberals are “too weak, too selfish, too beholden to corporate interests” to stop the Conservatives.

That, he says, is a job for the NDP.

The deal with the Liberals was put in place to support Trudeau’s minority government until 2025, as long as they help push through several policies.

The move comes nearly one week after the leader of the federal Conservatives called on Singh to pull out of the agreement, in order to trigger a fall election.

The prime minister appears to be unphased by the pullout.

Trudeau says his focus remains on delivering programs that help Canadians and not on politics.

He hopes the NDP will do the same when the House of Commons resumes.

“I certainly hope that the NDP will stay true to its fundamental values, which is making sure that Canadians get the support they need and keeping away the austerity, the cuts and the damage that Conservatives will do if they get the chance,” says Trudeau.

“We’ve shown by doing that we’ve been able to deliver for Canadians at a difficult time for them. Now, if the NDP choose to align themselves with the Conservatives who just want to cut and cause pain for Canadians at a time when we should be investing in Canadians, while Canadians will judge the NDP in the appropriate fashion.”

Trudeau says he remains optimistic that they will be able to make parliament work.

Poilievre pushes for election

As for the leader of the federal Conservatives, he is calling Singh’s announcement a ‘media stunt.’

On X, Pierre Poilievre says Singh refuses to make clear whether he will make a no-confidence vote against the Liberals, which would trigger a fall election.

“Two years ago, Sellout Singh sold out workers and signed on to a costly coalition with Justin Trudeau that hiked taxes, ballooned food costs, doubled housing costs and unleashed crime and chaos in our once safe streets.”

He goes on to say that Singh voted to quadruple the carbon tax, “a plan that will drive Canadians to food banks and grind our economy to a halt— killing hundreds of thousands of jobs.”
