Canada Post has issued a new stamp to honour singer-songwriter and musician Sarah McLachlan.

The multi-award-winning Canadian artist has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and is also known for her philanthropic work.

McLachlan has released a total of nine studio albums. Born and raised in Halifax, N.S., she moved to Vancouver, B.C. where she released her first album Touch in 1988 at age 20.

Her second album, Solace (1991), went gold in Canada and earned McLachlan her first two JUNO nominations and first win for Best Video for the single “Into the Fire.” Released in 1994, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024 with a North American tour.

The multi-platinum Surfacing (1997) – her best-selling one to date – includes hits such as “Building a Mystery,” “Sweet Surrender” and “Angel.” A critical and commercial success, it won two Grammy awards and four JUNO awards.

In 1997, McLachlan founded the exclusively female-fronted Lilith Fair concert tour, which boosted careers and raised more than $7 million for local and national charities.

Designed by Jocelyne Saulnier, the stamp features a photo of McLachlan with a stylized version of her signature and a detail from her hand silk-screened art print, Blue Sunrays.

In a Canada Post video, McLachlan says she’s “incredibly honoured and jazzed to be on a Canadian stamp.”

“I am a proud Canadian and deeply honoured. To me, stamps signify communication, the sharing of our stories and the ability to reach out across this great big, beautiful world and connect.”

According to a Canada Post article, McLachlan’s many accolades include the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Visionary Award (1998), what is now called the JUNO’s Humanitarian Award (2009) and a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement (Popular Music) (2015). She was also appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada (1999), invested into the Order of British Columbia (2001).

McLachlan has been a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame since 2017 and will be inducted into our nation’s Songwriters Hall of Fame on September 28th.
