John (Jack) Gow passed away September 9th, 2024 at his residence in the Berwick Retirement Community in Victoria, BC.
Jack was born in Kenora, Ontario May 31, 1929. He attended local schools prior to receiving an Electrical Engineering Degree at the University of Toronto. Although they never drove, Jack’s parents bought a car, which Jack drove during high school, making him very popular amongst his cronies and the local girls. At the U of T, course marks were delivered in public, via the Toronto newspapers. As nobody in Kenora received the Toronto papers, it was always an adventure finding out where he stood.
After university Jack travelled extensively in Europe by bicycle and had a couple of electrical engineering jobs before settling in to a long career with the CBC in Montreal. Jack served many years as President of Electrical Engineering helping usher in colour television and building the state of the art Toronto Broadcast Centre. He enjoyed his coworkers and said there were a few times they reached “the pint of no return “ after lunch. Jack and his wife Eve (Carson) moved to Victoria upon their respective retirements. They enjoyed many years together in their new home before Eve’s passing in 2008. No matter where Jack lived he made it back to Kenora to visit family. He enjoyed many summers and Christmases with nephew Bill and family on Lake of the Woods.
Jack was predeceased by his parents James and Janet, brothers Jim and Bill, sister Helen and nephew Ron.
Everyone who met Jack describes him as a true gentleman. He had a sharp wit, keen mind and a positive attitude.
Many thanks.
