Fire Rangers have made strong progress on two fires of note in the region.

Thunder Bay Fire 21 is now being held.

The 50-hectare fire is located roughly 62 kilometres west of Thunder Bay.

“FireRanger crews assisted by belly-tank equipped helicopters continue to make good progress on this fire,” said the Ministry of Natural Resources in a release.

Nipigon Fire 42 is now under control.

The 5.6-hectare fire is burning roughly 18 kilometres northwest of Nipigon.

Meanwhile, a prescribed burn is scheduled for Wednesday on an area near Lawrence Lake roughly 70 kilometres north of Fort Frances.

“The primary objective of the prescribed burn is to rehabilitate the naturally disturbed site to ensure a healthy and productive forest, following storm damage that took place in 2020,” said the MNR in a release.

The wildland fire hazard is predominantly low across the region’s northern half, and moderate across the southern half.

However, there are still pockets of high hazard along the border and around Thunder Bay.
