Vermilion Bay landfill fires finally out

The Vermilion Bay Landfill is finally open after a month of fighting stubborn fires in the garbage dump.

Mayor Gordon Griffiths the first fire was noticed in early November.

Since then, volunteer fire fighters were called out six times to deal with stubborn hot spots.

As much as 270,000 liters of water was poured on the fires trying to extinguish them.

The Machin Volunteer First Department says it had to use all its apparatus and other nearby fire departments also lent a hand.

The landfill was finally open to the public on Monday.
