Jaime Battiste, MP for Sydney-Victoria, has announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal Party, aiming to become Canada’s first Indigenous prime minister.
A member of the Eskasoni First Nation, Battiste made history in 2019 as the first Mi’kmaw elected to Parliament. Now, he seeks to continue breaking barriers by leading the country.
Battiste’s campaign will focus on key issues such as restarting First Nations child welfare talks, halting carbon tax increases, and working with premiers on climate change policies.
He also supports national programs like affordable housing, child care, and healthcare enhancements. His platform emphasizes the need for stronger Indigenous representation and broader regional voices in national leadership.
Though fundraising presents a challenge, with $40,000 raised out of the required $350,000 entry fee, Battiste remains undeterred, aiming to inspire Indigenous youth and communities across Canada.
His leadership bid comes as he seeks to prioritize reconciliation and social justice, areas he feels are underrepresented by other potential candidates.
Battiste has acknowledged past mistakes from controversial social media comments, emphasizing growth and a commitment to moving forward. With this campaign, he hopes to provide a new direction for the Liberal Party, championing a vision that includes all Canadians while paving the way for future generations.
