In the 1940s, Lewis began selling her colourful paintings outside her home along a highway in southwestern Nova Scotia. Two of her works were commissioned for the White House in the 1970s.
According to Wikipedia, one Lewis painting, called Black Truck, sold at auction in Toronto in 2022 for $350,000.
Despite her recognition, she died in poverty in 1970.
