The City of Dryden is getting more than $5 million from the province to build more homes.

$2.1 million is going to support the Van Horne Landing subdivision site servicing and road construction and $3 million dollars is coming from the Water Systems Fund.

Councillor Martin MacKinnon says the funding is welcome but is a long time coming.

“Dryden has been trying to get that money for at least 16 years, probably more like 20,” MacKinnon told council Monday night.

“To see it actually finally happen, that’s a wonderful thing, because we needed that to be done for quite a while.”

Mayor Jack Harrison says this will unlock a potential 30 acres of development in the urban area in the city.

“The first one was for the Housing Enabling Core Services for $2.147 million and secondly for the Water Systems Fund for $3 million.   So, a total of over $5 million for our city, putting infrastructure growth into the southern part of our city.”

Harrison adds that they have worked with the Ministry of Natural Resources for surplus land.

In particular, they’ll be using the MNR’s Lake Base property, in a phased-in approach, that will make this land available for housing development.
