The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is looking to connect with local and Indigenous businesses and suppliers in Thunder Bay and the region to give them access to procurement opportunities.

This comes as the Ignace and Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation area were selected as the host for Canada’s deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel last November.

The NWMO plans on utilizing local suppliers as much as possible.

“This is a major public infrastructure project, and we want to help businesses in the area compete for our procurement opportunities,” said Commercial Director Robert De Bartolo. “The organization is committed to moving our operations to the northwest, and establishing supplier relationships that are close to the future deep geological repository is an important part of our long-term supply process. This approach makes good business sense.”

The organization estimates that the repository will bring 400 to 600 jobs to the region.

“This is a multi-billion-dollar project lasting more than 100 years,” added De Bartolo. “It could help existing businesses grow and perhaps foster new businesses in Thunder Bay and the region. This isn’t just about jobs; it’s about building a stronger, more prosperous Northwestern Ontario for the next century.”

The NWMO plans on using the platform Biddingo to post opportunities for potential vendors.

Typically, the platform requires a fee to download procurement bid packages, but the NWMO is waiving those fees.

Even if there is no posting that suits your business, you are still encouraged to register on Biddingo to help the NWMO understand what company categories of items and services are available in the region.
