Canadian Turtle Is Getting Around In Style

By Johnathan Price Apr 29, 2025 | 10:59 AM

He doesn’t live in a sewer. He’s not named after a famous Italian painter. Pizza is not on his menu. He doesn’t ride a skate board.

However, a little wood turtle named “Root” who recently came to live at the Museum of Natural History in Halifax does have his own set of wheels that he uses to get around.

You see, unlike most turtles, Root is missing his right front foot.

He was originally collected from the wild by Natural Resources Department personnel and brought into captivity 20 years ago.

Root spends most of his time in his enclosure, but three times a week staff at the museum take him out on a little stroll.

Due to how unevenly he moves, staff have created a custom made platform with wheels. It helps to lift Root up higher off of the ground, so that his shell won’t get damaged. It’s made out of Lego pieces and a removable dog harness

The first day, Root had an unexpectedly speedy slide down a ramp, but he quickly became accustomed to using the contraption.

Now when they put his harness on, and he hears it snap into place, he’s ready to go.

With the help of his wheels, Root enjoys exploring different areas of the museum.

Wood turtles can live for 50 to 80 years!

Since Root might be a guest of theirs for awhile, it’s nice that they are making sure he’s comfortable.
