Conservative Eric Melillo took 50 percent of the vote in last night’s election in the new riding of Kenora-Kiiwetinoong.
He says he has mixed feeling about the election, with the leader Pierre Poilievre losing his seat.
“Yeah, it’s obviously disappointing…always want to win the election and form the government,” says Melillo.
“That’s always the goal every time, so when you come up short it’s tough. We had really good results and we’re forming very a strong opposition. One of the strongest we’re seen in recent decades, so I’m just really excited to get back to work.”
Melillo has won his third consecutive election and says it all comes down to hard work.
“I knocked, myself, I want to say around 8,000 doors personally in this election campaign and not to mention a lot of door-knocking prior to it, as well as some volunteers and members of my team. Just prioritizing reaching voters at the doorstep, talking to every single person that we could.”
Melillo adds that while US tariffs was one of the main issues in the election, rising costs, housing and health care were also mentioned as main issues in his door knocking.
He would like Mark Carney to recall Parliament as soon as possible, so they can deal with issues important to Canadians, like the US tariffs.
