More 51st state threats from Trump as the prime minister prepares to visit the U.S.
In an interview with NBC on Sunday, Trump said he’ll keep talking about Canada becoming the 51st state.
“Well, I think we’re not going to ever get to that point,” Trump said, but added that “something could happen with Greenland. I’ll be honest, we need that for national and international security.”
In the interview, Trump also reiterated his false claim that the U.S. subsidizes Canada for $200 billion a year. Experts say it is “utterly false” that the U.S. subsidizes Canada, according to the Centre for Future Work. The trade relationship between the two countries is one of the most balanced , compared to the trade relationships between the U.S. and other countries, the group says.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office says Carney will travel to the states on Monday and meet with the president on Tuesday. The statement said they will focus on “both the immediate trade pressures and the broader future economic and security relationship between the two sovereign nations.”
During Carney’s news conference on Friday, his first since the election, he said he will have “constructive — difficult, but constructive discussions” with the U.S. President.
