Rhea Sunshine Skead (Minogeeshi)
February 5, 1992 – May 6, 2025
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Rhea Sunshine Skead on May 6, 2025 at Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
Rhea was predeceased by her daughter Mina Skead-Myles, her nephew Jakob Fobister-Skead, and her grandmothers Francis Johnson and Jeannie Shead, as well as her grandfather Andrew Morrison.
She is survived by her grandfathers John “Poohba” Skead and Robert Kabatay, her mother Ladean Johnson, father Walter Skead, her siblings Sheldon, Jeannie (Deedee), Matthew, Celeste, Mark, Leon, Faith, Colleen, and Shaun, her partner Logan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born on February 5. 1992 at Lake of the Wood District Hospital, Rhea grew up with passion for the outdoors and love for sports. She would often be found fishing, playing baseball, or taking long drives, joys that brought her happiness. An avid sports fan, Rhea was a talented athlete in her own right, with a particular love for hockey and baseball. Her achievements on the ice and field were many, she was the first girl to play in the boys hockey league in Kenora, blazing a trail for others. Rhea was also recruited to play for the Bimidji AAA hockey team in Winnipeg and was a pitcher for Team Ontario at the North American Indigenous Games, where she proudly helped secure a bronze medal. Her determination reflected the strength of her spirit in all aspects of her life. She loved all her coaches and teammates who helped her grow into the person she was.
A loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend, she was fiercely protective of those she held dear. Very soft hearted and generous, qualities we all strive to have. Her courage was evident in everything she did, never hesitating to speak her mind and stand up for what she believed in. A woman of strength, grace and endless love, Rhea’s beauty radiated inside and out. While her time with us was far too short, she lived her life with an open heart and a strong spirit.
Rest in peace Dear Rhea, you will be missed more than words can say, your love and laughter will live on in our hearts until we see you again.
Pallbearers are Matthew, Mark, Leon, Shaun, Logan and Ethan. Honorary Pallbearers are Sheldon and Beckham Fobister.
Special thank you to Nurse Char and the staff at Lake of the Woods District Hospital, Health Science Centre, Thunder Bay Regional for their compassionate care and support during Rhea’s final days. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
