Multiple areas in northwestern Ontario are expected to be dealing with poor air quality caused by forest fires in the region.

Environment Canada has put a Special Air Quality Statement in effect for the Thunder Bay, Dryden, and Atikokan areas.

“Smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility,” explained the forecaster in the statement. “Wildfire smoke may remain in place for the next several days for some areas. As smoke levels increase, health risks increase. Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.”

The air quality can potentially cause you to experience mild symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough.

More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough.
