Confederation College is to benefit from provincial funding to expand nursing education programs across the province.
Health Minister Sylvia Jones says Confederation and Sudbury’s Cambrian College will share $1.5 million to increase enrolment.
“We are expanding capacity for nursing programs at Confederation College in Thunder Bay and Cambrian College in Sudbury, helping to increase enrollment and create new clinical placement opportunities by adding 50 new registered practical nursing seats at Confederation College and 17 at Cambrian College,” says Jones.
The funding is part of a larger $4.2 million commitment to expand nursing education across the province.
Shane Strickland, the Dean of Confederation’s School of Health, Negahneewin and Community Services, says the expansion of its nursing program is critical to meeting the healthcare demands of northwestern Ontario.
“This funding reduces the financial barriers that students in rural northern communities face, creating an opportunity to pursue nursing education in their home communities of Thunder Bay, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Fort Frances, Geraldton, Marathon and Kenora,” says Strickland.
The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario also welcomes the funding announcement.
