By Randy Thoms Jun 7, 2025 | 11:40 AM

Residents of Wabaseemong Independent Nation could be returning home soon.

The community northwest of Kenora has lifted an evacuation order that went into place in the middle of May because of a threatening forest fire.

About 800 residents were evacuated, with about 450 moved to Niagara Falls.

Others were staying in Kenora and Winnipeg.

Officials say that fire’s threat has been eased, allowing residents to return home.

More information on when they will go back is to be revealed today.

Ministry of Natural Resources crews are still working to remove equipment set up to protect buildings and homes.

It is expected that work will take at least a couple of days to complete.
