Canada desperately needs more sources of electricity.
That’s according to a news release from the Electricity Alliance of Canada.
They say the country’s annual output of 630 terawatt-hours will not meet future demand.
The group says the federal government’s recent One Canadian Economy Act does not focus enough on improving the electricity.
Pressure on power systems will grow faster as the economy becomes more digital and people switch away from fossil fuels.
The group says Canada needs to streamline project approvals and build interprovincial grids.
They say looming U.S. tariffs and trade tensions can also seriously impact supply chains in the sector, and the feds need to manage that risk. Indigenous communities need to be partners in any energy development as well, and expanding the Canada Infrastructure Bank and the Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program would bring more Indigenous communities into the sector. Long-term federal investment into training the workforce is also essential, they say.
