Fire crews in northwestern Ontario have successfully contained Kenora 20 near Ingolf, Wabaseemoong, and Malachi Lake, one month after it was first confirmed.
“Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Type 1 and Type 2 wildland firefighters, overhead staff, and flight crews, Kenora 20 is now being held at 36,043 hectares,” Ontario Forest Fires said in a social media post.
While firefighters continue to manage hotspots, officials say the fire is no longer expected to spread.
Despite this progress, larger fires continue to be active in the region.
Red Lake 12, burning near Deer Lake and Sandy Lake First Nations, has grown to 163,227 hectares.
Crews are reinforcing firebreaks and working to suppress flames to protect nearby communities.
In Webequie First Nation, the Nipigon 5 fire has held at 10,816 hectares, with no new growth reported.
Officials added that favourable weather has helped crews secure containment lines, and helicopter bucketing operations are ongoing.
Reports show that there are currently 21 wildfires burning in the northwest Region.
Of those, seven remain out of control, one is being contained, five are under control, and eight are being monitored.
