Raymond “Stubby” Pakon
November 7, 1935 – June 10, 2025
Stubby Pakon passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 10, 2025, at Pinecrest Home for the Aged, at the age of 89.
Born in Wildwood, Alberta, on November 7, 1935, Stubby lived a full and steady life marked by devotion to his family, friends, and work. He began his long career as an engineer with CP Rail on June 25, 1952, and faithfully served until his retirement on February 1, 1993.
Never one to sit still for long, Stubby kept himself busy in retirement. He served on Kenora City Council during the 1992–1994 term, giving back to his community with the same commitment he brought to his working life. He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion and proudly served as President of Kenora Legion Branch #12 for several years.
Stubby had a deep love for fishing, especially at his favorite spot—Pelican Pouch—where many cherished memories were made. What he loved most was spending the winter months in Penticton, BC, with Shirley, Ed, Irene, and many dear friends. A true entertainer and social soul, Stubby’s garage in the North End was always open. You were greeted with: “Do you want a beer?”— and then, “Get it yourself!” That’s just how he rolled.
Stubby spent his final years at Pinecrest Home for the Aged where he met new and old friends. He attended most resident activities, one being “social hour”, which he enjoyed. Stubby was on Resident Council where he was a voice for his fellow residents.
Stubby was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley, his parents John and Lena, sisters Olga Etty (Douglas) and Ann Willison (Maxwell), and brothers Walter and Sydney.
He is lovingly remembered by his sister-in-law Irene White and brother-in-law Ed, as well as by his nieces Cindy Johnson (Eric), Shelley Houlden (Brad), Debbie White, Marcia Reid (Daryl), Deborah Duncker (Peter) and his nephews John and William Etty, Don Willison (Kathleen). He also leaves behind many great-nieces and great-nephews who will remember him with affection, stories, and laughter.
Stubby was deeply grateful for the love and support his family gave him following Shirley’s passing. He never failed to say thank you during visits, and often spoke of how proud he was of his great-nieces and nephews—frequently remarking on how smart they were.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Pinecrest Home for the Aged and to Dr. Michelle Thomas for their compassionate care.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Kenora Legion Branch #12 on July 4th, 2025 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Stubby are invited to make donations to the Pinecrest Home for the Aged Ladies Auxiliary.
