The Government of Manitoba has lifted its State of Emergency due to the wildfire situation.
Premier Wab Kinew says they made the decision, because conditions are slowly improving.
“Well, I think first and foremost, there is the safety consideration and having a number of days where we’ve seen a trend of things moving in the right direction, both in terms of the wildfire situation, but also more and more communities repatriating,” Kinew told a news conference Monday afternoon, after the State of Emergency had been lifted.
Kinew says they didn’t want to keep the State of Emergency in place any longer than needed.
“The effect of this that some of the emergency orders that we had around congregate shelters, security measures, supports for pets, were no longer needed. We’re still providing these services, but we’re able to deliver them using the normal channels of government.”
Currently, 9,000 people have returned home after being evacuated, and that number is expected to grow by Wednesday, as residents of Flin Flon are able to return home.
There are still more than 13,000 evacuees in the province.
