The provincial government is continuing its support for primary care teams.

Funding of over $235 million will help create new teams or expand existing ones that aim to connect more people to primary care.

Health Minister Sylvia Jones says the money will help 300,000 people.

“This investment is part of our government’s $2.1 billion primary care action plan to connect everyone in Ontario to a publicly funded family care doctor or primary care team,” says Jones.

The funding goes to 130 proposals that were approved by the Health Ministry.

Proposals in areas with a high number of people without access to a family doctor were given priority.

The Ministry of Health says that each one has established plans to address the need and has demonstrated a readiness to achieve significant progress within a year.

Through the funding, primary care teams will receive operational funding of $142 million over three years to recruit and retain healthcare workers.

Jones says they can include non-physician members such as nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physician assistants and pharmacists.

“By funding new and expanded primary care teams across Ontario, our government is protecting Ontario’s healthcare system,” says Jones.

The Ministry’s objective is to connect all Ontario residents to primary care by the spring of 2026.
