Wildfire update: 47 fires active, Red Lake 12 holding steady

The number of active wildfires in Ontario’s Northwest Region has climbed to 47, with two new fires confirmed Monday evening and four others added late Sunday.

 

As of July 7, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports:

 

    • 9 fires not under control
    • 3 fires being held
    • 9 fires under control
    • 26 fires being observed

 

New fires confirmed:

 

July 6:

 

    • Thunder Bay 23: West of Alphonse Bay in Caribou Lake, 1 hectare, now under control.
    • Nipigon 15: Near Kellow Lake, 0.5 hectares, being held.
    • Red Lake 80 and Sioux Lookout 50 were called out.

 

July 7:

 

    • Sioux Lookout 51: Near Stewart Bay on the west side of North Caribou Lake, 1 hectare, not under control.
    • Sioux Lookout 52: Southwest of Delbridge Lake, 3.5 hectares, being observed.

 

Fire hazard conditions:

 

The wildfire hazard is low to moderate in southern parts of the region, including near the Manitoba border, but remains high to extreme through much of the Red Lake and Sioux Lookout zones.

 

Red Lake 12

 

The largest fire in the region, Red Lake 12, is still being held at 195,670 hectares. It is located near Deer Lake and Sandy Lake First Nations. Ground crews and aerial support remain active in the area.
