The City of Kenora is planning to expropriate the Kenricia Hotel.

The heritage building has been has become an eye sore in downtown Kenora and hasn’t been well-maintained.

During a special council meeting on Thursday, councillor Graham Chaze says he supports the city’s move.

“We need to make bold moves to make our community a better place,” Chaze said prior to reading a motion to expropriate the Kenricia.

“I have seen this building decline year after year, and I feel now is the time to save this building.”

Council voted unanimously in favour of the motion.

In a prepared statement mayor Andrew Poirier says, “The Kenricia Hotel is a symbol of our community’s rich history, and its successful redevelopment is a vital component of our plans to create an activated and dynamic downtown.”
“Through this process we can set the stage to attract new investment and preserve the heritage, look, and feel of an iconic property located in the heart of Kenora. This is truly an exciting and historic moment for the people of Kenora and all those who want to see us grow and thrive.”
Stace Gander, Director of Economic Development and Tourism and acting Co-CAO, adds, “This project not only safeguards an important piece of Kenora’s heritage but also supports our vision of a vibrant, thriving downtown. Restoring this landmark will attract visitors, support local businesses, and open new opportunities for economic activity and community vibrancy.”
The city says expropriation process will be conducted in a fair, transparent, and respectful manner, keeping all partners and impacted parties informed, and in alignment with the steps specified in the Expropriations Act of Ontario, Ontario Heritage Act and or Planning Act.

The city hasn’t said what its plans are for the building but confirms it’s all part of the effort to revitalize the downtown core.
