Airport Road residents concerned about Morgan Fuels proposal

Residents living in the Airport Road area of Kenora are up in arms over a proposal for bulk fuel depot and card lock.

Morgan Fuels wants to build on property that that was used as an old gravel pit.

Dean Caron lives in the area and says he has a number of concerns about this development.

“Most of our neighbors have surface wells…they are very shallow, they’re like 20 to 30 feet down,” Caron told a packed zoning meeting in council chambers this week.

“Very susceptible to a spill.  That’s a real big concern…the impact to the local water supply to the area.  Air pollution of course.  If they have their spills and fumes from trucks.  There’s going to be air pollution.

Caron adds there are other concerns that have to be taken into consideration.

“There are going to be more trucks…large trucks on the road obviously.  That’s going to further damage the Airport Road.  Making the road that isn’t in great, in worse condition, which is going to increase the safety risk.  The increase in traffic is going to make walking and cycling riskier.”

Morgan Fuels says the fuel depot and card lock would only take up a small portion of the property, and the other part would be used for development of new housing.

Council hasn’t indicated if or when it’s going to vote on the zoning change for the property.
