Park operators seek 5-year contract extension

The operators of Anicinabe Park are asking for an extension of their contract with the city of Kenora.

Middle Lake Enterprises has run the park since 2019.

Susan Evergreen says when they first partnered with the city, they presented a four-season business plan.

She says they were well on their way to achieving their objectives when the pandemic struck and disrupted operations and investments.

“We were further impacted by the events of June 25 this year, which, in the city of Kenora’s own words, resulted in a catastrophic loss to our business, to the city of Kenora, and to the community as a whole,” says Evergreen.

That date marked a fire that destroyed the park’s main office and a police standoff with an individual.

Evergreen says in the absence of a plan from the city, they propose one of their own.

“Given the unique circumstances, we respectfully ask council to consider forgoing the usual tender process for this contract period. With a five-year contract extension, we can continue working closely with the city to restore and enhance Anishinaabe Park while also having the opportunity to recover from the significant financial setbacks experienced during our tender period.”

Council has not yet decided on the matter.
