Roughly 1,200 charges were laid by officers in the northwest region during the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Operation Impact an annual safety campaign sees officers collectively targeting motorists who speed, are not wearing seatbelts, drive distractedly, or are impaired or fatigued.

Speeding tickets led the way with 640 handed out over the weekend, followed by 35 people caught not wearing a seatbelt.

Officers also laid 18 impaired driving charges and gave out five tickets for distracted driving.

This comes as the provincial police have seen a sharp increase in deaths linked to driver inattention as well as fatalities involving cyclists and pedestrians.
