The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service has launched two pilot projects which will have front line officers wear body cameras.

In a post to social media the service which has 34 detachments scattered across the far north has selected two communities, Constance Lake and Mishkeegogamang First Nations, to serve for the pilot.

A NAPS spokesperson says the move will provide the communities NAPS serves a more modern and accountable police service.

“This program will also provide our officers with more of the tools they need to fulfill their duties. We’re confident the results of these ongoing pilot projects will showcase the strengths of a DEMS (Digital Evidence Management Systems) program and we are excited to move this project forward.”

They add a full and formal rollout of the program at the remaining 32 detachments is on schedule to be completed this year.
