The Northwestern Health Unit has reported 11 new cases of COVID-19 in region, including 10 cases in the Kenora region and one case in the District of Rainy River.

Ontario reported 1,076 new cases of COVID-19 Friday.

In addition, one case from the District of Rainy River region reported earlier this week has been assigned to a different health unit as the person is currently staying/isolating in that health unit’s area and not ours.

The health unit defines the Kenora region as: English River 21, Jaffray-Mellick, Keewatin, Kenora , Kenora 38B, Lake Of The Woods 37, Minaki, Norman, Northwest Angle 33B, Rat Portage 38A, Redditt, Sabaskong Bay (Part) 35C, Sabaskong Bay 35D, Shoal Lake (Part) 39A, Shoal Lake (Part) 40, Shoal Lake 34B2, Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls, The Dalles 38C, Wabaseemoong, Whitefish Bay 32A, Whitefish Bay 33A and Whitefish Bay 34A.

The health unit defines the District of Rainy River as: Alberton, Atikokan, Barwick, Big Grassy River 35G, Big Island Mainland 93, Chapple, Couchiching 16A, Dawson, Devlin, Emo, Finland, Fort Frances, La Vallee Township, Lake of the Woods, Long Sault 12, Manitou Rapids 11, Morley, Morson, Neguaguon Lake 25D, Rainy Lake 17A, Rainy Lake 17B, Rainy Lake 18C, Rainy Lake 26A, Rainy River, Rainy River Unorganized Territory, Sabaskong Bay (Part) 35C, Saug-a-Gaw-Sing 1, Seine River 23A, Seine River 23B, Sleeman and Stratton.

Follow up with the persons involved and their contacts has started according to protocol. Anyone who is identified as a contact for these cases will be contacted directly.

NWHU recommends that everyone assume COVID-19 is in their community and practise preventive measures like physical distancing, wearing a mask in enclosed public spaces and when physical distancing is a challenge, good hand hygiene, and not touching their face. Anyone who has symptoms, or who has been in contact with a positive case, should self-isolate and get tested.

To date, there have been 294 confirmed and six probable cases of COVID-19 reported across the district. 277 of the 300 total cases have been listed as resolved with 20 active cases in the Kenora region, one active case in the Sioux Lookout region, one active case in the District of Rainy River and one death.
