The Ontario government is hoping to reduce crime across the province with expanded video surveillance technology, and funding is coming to Dryden and Sioux Lookout.
Kenora-Rainy River MPP and Minister of Northern Development, Greg Rickford, says the Dryden OPP is receiving $70,000 and the Sioux Lookout Police Services Board is receiving $48,000 to better protect the two communities.
Rickford says the funding will be used to replace outdated equipment, expand or enhance current technology, and install new or additional closed circuit television cameras in areas where crime is most prevalent.
“Our government is proud to deliver on the promise to provide police with the support they need to do their jobs effectively in our communities,” said Rickford. “By enhancing CCTV systems in Dryden and Sioux Lookout, we are protecting the safety and security of families across the northwest.”
The City of Kenora didn’t receive funding for the program in 2022-2023, but cameras were installed in a variety of locations back in 2018 through a collaboration with city council.
