New technology being used by the OPP has led to impaired driving charges for a 24-year-old Nestor Falls man.
The Fort Frances OPP say officers initiated a traffic stop on Sixth Street on March 7, shortly after midnight, after they were alerted of a suspected unlicensed driver by the OPP’s new automated licence plate recognition system.
Through the investigation, the OPP determined the driver of the vehicle was impaired and was placed under arrest. They were then brought to the detachment for further testing, and charges were laid.
The North West Region OPP began using automated licence plate readers last month.
Each OPP cruiser now has up to three cameras installed to help notify police of expired registrations, arrest warrants, missing persons or if a vehicle has been reported stolen.
The OPP reminds the public that if you suspect someone is driving while impaired, it’s important to call 911 and report it immediately.
