The OPP have made another change to how residents can access a criminal record check.

In September, the OPP said in order to limit in-person contact and to reduce the risk of COVID-19, they were only accepting online applications, and only those requiring fingerprinting services would be required to attend their local detachment.

Now, due to a high volume of online record check requests, the OPP is transferring the process back to detachments until an enhanced online program is finalized, and the current online process has been shut-down.

Effective immediately, residents who require a criminal record check, who have not already submitted a request online, are asked to contact their local detachment and set-up an appointment.

Only cash will be accepted, and the exact amount for each record check is required. A criminal record check costs $41, a volunteer check is free, a duplicate copy costs $11 and fingerprinting services cost an additional $90.

“The OPP understands the change in process may cause inconvenience, however it is confident that new measures taken to improve processing times will lead to shorter wait times for the public,” wrote police, in a prepared release.

However, the OPP say residents do have two other alternatives to receive a record check. They include using a third party vendor, however they may not meet your organization’s requirements.

Another alternative is to request a self-declaration of criminal convictions, through the OPP’s Vulnerable Sector Check. Organizations may deem this acceptable, until the police record check can be completed.
