Dryden’s own Chuck Schmitt has taken home some hardware at this year's Hockey Northwestern Ontario 2021 Awards. Schmitt is the recipient of this year's Most Deserving Official award.

Schmitt said, “It was a nice surprise, it's always nice to be recognized for doing well. It was nice to get a little nod of appreciation for doing that.”

This year would mark 15 years of refereeing for HNO and loves being on the ice with kids and adults of all ages. His love for being a referee is due to the fact he gets to make sure that people play fairly and he gets to contribute to a game that everyone loves.

Schmitt is heavily involved in the community of Dryden as he has reffed and coached hockey, soccer, and basketball. He is also involved in many fundraising events and loves giving back to the community.

“Chuck is one of Hockey Northwestern Ontario’s senior officials. He has always shown a willingness to help supervise and mentor the junior and senior officials on and off the ice.  Chuck has a great sense of humour in the dressing room and keeps the mood positive before game-time. His kind words in teachable moments during games helps all officials to challenge and elevate their game to the next level.” said in a statement from HNO

Schmitt is looking forward to lacing up the skates and getting back onto the ice come this fall for another hockey season.
