The Shoal Lake Number 40 pandemic planning team, Chief and council have confirmed the first case of COVID-19 within the community.
According to a press release shared on social media, "a member had been receiving health care at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg, where an outbreak had occurred. The member had been tested at the hospital and then again upon return into the community, in which the test returned positive for COVID-19."
The release went on to say, the individual has been transported home without any close contact and now self-isolating at home.
The most recent case in the region comes as Ontario has reported 1,426 new cases of COVID-19, a record high for the province, and just hours before Manitoba goes into lockdown to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in that province.
Everyone should assume COVID-19 is in their community and practice preventive measures like:
- physical distancing,
- wearing a mask in enclosed public spaces and when physical distancing is a challenge,
- good hand hygiene,
- not touching their face and
- staying home when sick
Anyone who has symptoms, or who has been in contact with a positive case, should get tested.
Residents are also being asked by the Northwestern Health Unit to avoid non-essential travel outside the region.
