Staff with the Northwestern Health Unit have confirmed the first COVID-19 related death in the region.
The NWHU says it was an elderly individual with other health issues. Out of respect for the family of the deceased, no further information on the individual will be provided by the NWHU.
“On behalf of all of us at NWHU I would like to convey our sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Dr. Kit Young Hoon, Medical Officer of Health of Northwestern Health Unit.
“I am sorry we have such a tragic reminder of how dangerous COVID-19 is and how much we all need to take measures such as physical distancing, good hand hygiene, and wearing a mask in enclosed public spaces and when physical distancing is a challenge, while we continue to find other ways to support each other and our communities.”
NWHU say they will continue work with health care providers, hospitals and long-term care providers to minimize the impact of COVID-19 in our communities.
The Northwestern Health Unit is reporting 7 active cases of COVID-19 in the Rainy River District and 2 in the Kenora Region.
