Keewatin’s Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson wrapped up Day 1 of the 2021 Farmers Insurance Bassmaster Elite event on the St. Lawrence River.

Gussy weighed in on Day 1 with a total haul of 5 fish for a total weight of 18 pounds 5 ounces which leaves him in a tie for 30th place. He did mention while weighing in that the day didn’t start according to plan.

“I love this place and that was one of the worst and stressful tournament days I've ever had. Most of that weight came in the last hour. I lost a couple of big ones this morning. I went for like 3 or 4 hours and just caught a few little ones it was just one of those days, luckily I sort of survived, and hopefully, tomorrow will go a little smoother.” said Gustafson after weigh-in.

Gussy comes into this event ranked 34th in the “Angler of the Year” ranking with a total of 471 points and is hoping to be the first Canadian to win two Bassmaster Elite Events.

Gussy finished in 14th place at last week's 2021 Guaranteed Rate Bassmaster Elite Event at Lake Champlain with a tournament total of 56 pounds 1 ounce.

Day two take-offs are scheduled for 6 a.m., with weigh-ins scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow.
