The Northwestern Health Unit catchment area will remain in the "Yellow-Protect" tier in the Ontario COVID-19 Response Framework, despite the dramatic rise in COVID-19 cases in the Kenora region.
Reported cases of COVID-19 have spiked this month, with 121 new cases being reported since February 1 which accounts for 30 per cent of all cases reported since the pandemic began.
no evidence of spread to the municipality of Kenora from outbreaks in the surrounding area.
Earlier today, the province introduced an "emergency break," which allows the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Ontario, in consultation with the local medical officer of health, to immediately advise moving a region into Grey-Lockdown to interrupt transmission.
Dr. Young Hoon says at this time the new measure will not be implemented.
"At this point most of the cases in the Kenora region are localized to one community," said Dr. Young Hoon, "the idea of using an emergency break does not seem relevant at this point for the entire catchment area and it's not something we're considering at this time."
