The City of Kenora has announced the official cancellation of the 2020/2021 ice season at both the Kenora Recreation Centre and Keewatin Memorial Arena.

All organized sports have been put to a stop for the remainder of the season and the ice surface at the Kenora Rec Centre is set to be removed immediately. The surface will be utilized as a mass COVID-19 vaccination centre in conjunction with the Northwestern Health Unit.

"We are very sad to announce that our hockey season is coming to a close. We will be issuing prorated refunds.Huge thanks to all of our hockey families, coaches, COVID reps, referees, trainers, conveners and all of our other volunteers for making this season possible. Please stay warm and please stay safe!." said the Lake of the Woods Minor Hockey Association.

The decision came following the recent spike in COVID cases in the Kenora area and in consideration of the short time remaining in the season.

As of Thursday morning, there were 89 cases in the NWHU catchment area, including 86 in the Kenora region, two in the Dryden/Red Lake region and two in the Sioux Lookout region.
