Influenza outbreak at Pinecrest, COVID-19 outbreak continues

A second outbreak is being reported at Kenora’s Pinecrest.

Assistant Administrator and Human Resources Manager, Michelle Spencer, says the Northwestern Health Unit has declared an influenza outbreak in Unit #3, with 1 positive resident and 3 residents presenting symptoms.

Visitors are warned that affected residents may only have one designated visitor during their isolation period, which lasts 5 days for influenza – otherwise known as the flu – pending symptom improvement.

As per Pinecrest’s respiratory outbreak guidelines, all residents have been provided with oral antiviral medication, and all residents have or will receive the influenza vaccine by the end of the day.

This comes as Pinecrest continues to fight against a COVID-19 outbreak in Unit #4, which was first reported on October 28. Spencer says residents are doing well and they hope to see the outbreak lifted by Monday.

But until then, visitor guidelines are as follows in Unit 4:

– 1 designated essential caregiver for COVID-19-positive residents with mask, PPE,
– Visits should remain in the resident’s room when possible,
– 2 designated essential caregivers for residents in other units,
– No visitors under the age of 18 are allowed,

All visitors are reminded that if you are feeling unwell or have been in contact with someone who is unwell, please refrain from visiting the home.

The NWHU reminds residents that influenza vaccines are available. Get vaccinated by contacting your local pharmacy or health care provider, or by making an appointment using the health unit’s vaccine booking system.
