Yesterday evening, members of the 774 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps and 645 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron had their Annual Ceremonial Review. Many cadets received awards and recognition, but Reviewing Officer Lt./Col Tom McNeil  recognized two cadets with some special awards.

For his quick-thinking and use of the Heimlich maneuver to aid a fellow cadet, Warrant Officer Adam Bangs was awarded the Commanding Officer's Commendation. Bangs said he had in idea he was would be receiving some type of recognition.

"I didn't know that there was an award for it, but I knew that I was getting some dedication for it," he said.

Bangs added he had also received a letter from Kenora's MP.

"Greg Rickford wrote me a letter, and he said he had to do it once. He mailed it to me and everything from his office in Ottawa," he said.

The commendation is the highest award a commanding officer can give.

McNeil also recognized Warrant Officer Second Class Erin Archer with the Lord Strathcona Medal. Archer explained how she felt about the recognition

"Pretty honored actually. I didn't expect to get it to be honest," she said.

The Lord Strathcona Medal is awarded to a Canadian cadet in recognition of exemplary performance in physical and military training. Archer said she had been working hard to perfect and pass on her cadet training.

"I went to drill camp about two years ago. I've been practicing -- getting a lot better -- and I've been teaching the cadets what I know," she said.

The Lord Strathcona Medal is the highest award that can a cadet can receive.
