The achievements of St. Thomas Aquinas’ students and athletes were celebrated virtually recently, with over 60 awards being handed out by staff, coaches and leadership with the Kenora Catholic District School Board.
Overall, local swimmers Gabriel and Emilia Mastromatteo were the co-winners of the OFSAA Award of Excellence, while Gabe also split TA’s Athletic Award of Excellence with Abby Dent of the Kenora Rowing Club.
Keenan Brown was named as the Junior Male Athlete of the Year, while Ben Woodbeck won the Senior Male Athlete of the Year award. Marlies Illot took home the Senior Female Athlete of the Year, while Elizabeth Spivey-Gittins won the Junior Female Athlete of the Year honours.
“To the athletes, congratulations to each of you, whether you received an award or not. Each of your efforts during training, practices, games and events have helped to benefit all of your peers,” said Athletic and Active Living Lead for the KCDSB, Megan Derouard, who also thanked KCDSB leadership, staff, and parents for their efforts.
Derouard adds that TA athletes was successful at NorWOSSA and attended 4 OFSAA championships in golf, nordic skiing, swimming and boy’s volleyball. Overall, TA athletes brought the school 7 gold medals, 5 silvers, 2 bronze medals and two first place finishes in cheer competitions.
“To our coaches, thank you for your time, commitment, and your unwavering dedication to the sport and player development. You never failed to give it your all, even when obligations to family, work and other commitments remain prevalent. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed.”

Due to COVID-19, the banquet was held virtually opposed to TA’s gymnasium. The ceremony took place on the evening of October 15.
