The Kenora Recreation Centre will be getting some critical upgrades over the next few years thanks to a large investment from the government of Ontario.

It was announced by Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford at the Kenora Recreation Centre on February 9, 2022, that the Centre will receive over $3.6 million dollars from the provincial government, specifically from the ministry of infrastructure, to put towards critical upgrades.

In total, the Kenora Recreation Centre Rehabilitation Project is expected to cost just under $5 million with the remainder of the funds coming from the City of Kenora.

“The Kenora Recreation Centre is an essential part of our vibrant, healthy and active community,” said Mayor Dan Reynard.

He continued, “The planned improvements inside the facility along with the significant investment in the baseball diamonds and tennis courts will positively impact the lifespan of our recreation facility and amenities and enhance the quality of life we all enjoy.”

“We are grateful to have this provincial funding support and are excited to start these major upgrades,” he concluded.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP, Greg Rickford, was asked about his excitement for the new upgrades “Part of this is born from a philosophy I've had throughout the pandemic, when we come out of this cautiously, I want people to be able to have a new experience, a refreshed experience at least in our recreational assets.”

“Families in Kenora will benefit greatly from these exciting investments for our community,” said Rickford.

Stace Gander, Director of Community Services said this about the potential timeline of events, “We are looking at about a three-to-four-year timeframe to do all of this work – these are major projects.”

He continued to say that the majority of this year will probably be devoted to planning for the upgrades, that physical progress will most likely not start until the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.

The City will proceed with the following projects:

  • Replacing the rink dry pad
  • Replacing the roof on the pool and fitness centre portion of the building
  • Improvements to the dressing rooms
  • Improvements to the foyer
  • Structural improvements to the water slide
  • Replacing the changing room shower tiles
  • Upgrades for the pool system
  • Improvements to the tennis courts and baseball diamonds at the Kenora Recreation Centre site
