The new Canada Water Agency will be located in Winnipeg.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says located the Water Agency in Winnipeg just makes sense.

“Folks who have been in developing water expertise here in Winnipeg and Manitoba, that is so impactful right across the country, that made it a very clear decision to bring the Canada Water Agency here in Winnipeg,” Trudeau said in a press conference in Wednesday morning beside the Red River near the Forks.

Trudeau says the agency will be a hub to coordinate Canada’s efforts to protect the nations fresh water.

“This is an investment in budget 2023 of close to $750 million that will be led right out of here in Manitoba, to handle the challenges that we’re facing around water, not only here in the prairies, but right across the country.”

The location of the new agency still hasn’t been determined, how many people it will employ or when it will actually be up and running.

Trudeau says the first priorities of the agency will be to update the Canada Water Act, which was passed back in 1970.
