MNR says fish spawn in local waters should be fine, depite low water levels

With below average water levels expected for the year, many are concerned about the effects on the fish spawn. Mary Duda, a Ministry of Natural Resources biologist, says that they're not concerned about this year's fish spawn.

"Overall I'm not really overly concerned that the spawning will be negatively impacted at this point," she said.

She notes that many of the natural spawning habitats will not be impacted by the water levels.

"Fortunately for us, we probably have quite a bit of spawning habitat that the fish can access that are in the lake or in the rivers that won't be affected by the water levels," she said.

The Lake of the Woods Control Board is keeping track of the water levels and they say an above average amount of rain is needed to see normal water levels on the lake.
