Nursing students at Lakehead University now have access to a third 10-bed, hands-on learning space at the campus in Thunder Bay.

Director of the School of Nursing Doctor Kristen Jones-Bonofiglio says this latest addition will lead to prospective students choosing Lakehead over other nursing programs in the province.

“Certainly labs and hands-on practice time are at the top of their list because when students are thinking about becoming a nurse they’re thinking about skills and assessment and clinical. There are lots of other components to being a nurse but those things are probably the ones that are most top of mind.”

Dr. Jones-Bonofiglio notes the expansion to the third lab, with a fourth in development, will allow them to spread students out and give them more hands-on opportunities as they start the program.

Adapting to new technology is a must when training the next generation of nurses.

“We’re really hoping to use this particular lab for our year one and two students, so really learning their basic nursing assessment skills and then their basic nursing skills. We’ll also use this lab for advanced skills for our nurse practitioner students.”

Lakehead University currently offers six different nursing programs.
