Albertans have had their say and they’ve chosen the United Conservative Party to continue to lead the province for the next four years.

Despite a state of emergency caused by wildfires and being found to have violated the conflict of interest act, Danielle Smith will remain as Alberta’s Premier.

Smith spent the last seven and a half months as Premier taking over from Jason Kenney, who resigned just over a year ago.

She and the UCP required 44 seats of the 87 which make up the Alberta Legislature to secure a majority.

Unofficial election results have the UCP winning 49 seats.

However despite the win the party ended up losing 11 seats, including some held by members of Smith’s cabinet.

Meanwhile Rachel Notley and Alberta’s New Democrats will form the official opposition in the Legislature.

According to Elections Alberta the unofficial turnout was 62.38% with a total of 1.7 million valid votes cast.

Official results will be revealed on June 8th.
