Criticism for the federal government’s gun buyback program.
Details on the most recent program were unveiled last week for retail outlets.
Kenora MP Eric Melillo is concerned that the buyback program is going to cost too much.
“This program estimated to cost, I believe, billions of dollars,” says Melillo.
“It’s definitely going to be a costly endeavour to buy back all these firearms. So, if the government isn’t even budgeting for that, obviously that’s a major concern because we know they’re already running massive deficits with no plan to get back to balance.”
Melillo adds that he’s also concerned with the most recent amendments to the federal firearms legislation because it still targets lawful gun owners and hunters.
“The Liberals keep bringing this back, you know, slightly different wording, but at the end of the day, they are still moving forward with the same misguided policy of targeting lawful firearms owners, whether it’s hunters or Indigenous peoples of northwestern Ontario. Those are the only people that are going to be impacted.”
Melillo suggests the government’s gun control measures aren’t working because the violent crime rate has gone up 32 percent since the Liberals took office.
